I've Given Up on Social Norms and Accepted the Life of a Curmudgeon

I'll take the next one

Some old curmudgeon I saw waiting for the elevator at work yesterday has seriously got me thinking. He provoked the widest range of feelings towards a stranger that I think I’ve ever experienced, all in the course of an elevator ride.

I should explain. I arrived at work, like most mornings, freshly caffeinated, meaning I had about an hour-hour and half period of absolute thought clarity, then its all mush from there. I’m not kidding, my bosses know it, and my employees know it. If you need me to do something of any import, and it has to be done that day, you need to ask me promptly when I get in, and hope that A) I don’t have other things already planned to get done, and B) I’m not deep in some philosophical thought cycle that started on the ride to work, or in the case of y yesterday, on the ride up the elevator.

So I arrived at the elevator bank with a clear mind, and saw the aforementioned old curmudgeon. I describe him as this, because he had white hair and old man shoes (Rockport’s), and also, because he was clearly perturbed that I’d decided to join him in waiting for the elevator. Gave a short roll of the eyes and the slightest shake of the head…Blatant ageism if you ask me. What, because I don’t suffer from the symptoms of ED I should be expected to walk a few flights of stairs to work? Bullshit.

So I was a bit miffed. What the fuck old man? How big of an asshole could this guy be? Did he have big plans for the elevator once it got there? Going to break out some personal phone conversation for the 30 second ride discussing his bucket list and living will? I was really ticked off…it’s not like I’d broken protocol and snuck into an elevator at the last second, we were just waiting there in the lobby for the next available one.

Then we got on the elevator, his grumpy demeanor did not change, but a thought occurred to me; that’s Me. That old man, presumably beaten down from years of working at some job that he never liked but paid well enough, is me. I think I’ll probably react the same way he did some day. Hell, I think I’m already there, I already rush into the elevator and smash the close doors button as rapidly as I can, like I’m trying to pull off a finishing move in Mortal Kombat. For whatever reason I crave that 30 second ride of privacy, in that one moment each day, the thought of sharing a 5x4 metal cube with some complete stranger seems like absolute torture.

The problem is I never know where to look; do I look down at my feet like some kind of simpleton? Do I pull out my phone and pretend to be looking at important things (yes), stare straight ahead like an asshole pretending you don’t even exist (sometimes)? I know the polite thing to do would be to make some quick eye contact, and perhaps a nod of the head, I know this. But I’m not going to do it. In my mind that’ll lead to this person thinking we’re elevator buddies, it’ll escalate to us having to say hi, and then after a couple of weeks just saying “hi” will seem short, so we’ll both start having bullshit one line conversations about the weather or “how it’s going” (standard response at my office: “I’m still here, right?” It’s really sad). Next thing you know they’re showing me pictures of their niece or something, and Facebook friending me, writing “happy birthday” on my wall once a year, compelling me to have to do the same, less I break the bonds of our society’s social norms.

And I think there in-lies the problem. I hate a good deal of the social norms when it comes to the office. I work with about 700 people. It’s impractical and an inefficient use of time for me to attempt to befriend or be cordial to all of them. If I don’t know you, don’t want to know you, or can’t potentially see myself needing you for something in the future, why do I have to do the whole niceties thing with you? Can’t we both just walk past each other in the hallway like two strangers would on the sidewalk in the city? Because we’re confined to the same building we have to act like someday we’ll be BFF’s? Take the token head nod and “hey how’s it going” which is always met with the same, illogical response of, “hey what’s up?” I say illogical, because if someone asks you how it’s going, the logical answer would be to tell them how it’s going, but we don’t. We answer the question with a slight variation of the same question. In no way does this make sense, but we all accept it. And we accept it because, frankly, we don’t give a shit how it’s going. We’re just asking because social norms tell us it’s the polite, human thing to do, even if it makes no sense and we genuinely don’t care what the answer is. It would be refreshing to see some complete stranger catch someone off guard and be like “oh, horrible, I just had an abortion this weekend, I was only in the first trimester so I didn’t think I’d have this strong of an emotional reaction, but I’m an absolute wreck right now, thank you for asking. How’s everything with you.” Not only would I pay to see that happen for comedic purposes, but I think if a few people answered the “how’s it going” question honestly once in a while, it might spark a change in society. No one wants to know the details of a stranger or loose acquaintance's life, yet we continue to ask on a regular basis. I think actually getting the answers would shock some people and stop this practice, which would benefit me greatly.

For one thing, I’d no longer feel like a social pariah when I borderline snub someone that I don’t really know. I won’t full out completely ignore someone if they initiate communication, if someone says hello as we pass by it’s not like I turn my head the other way. I have a go-to move in those situations, a simple nod of the head down ward, and I mouth the word “hey.” Note that I said mouth…I don’t actually say it; I just move my lips in the same manner that you would if you were to actually say “hey” (I’m completely serious). I will snub you if you don’t initiate the pleasantries. I’ll never be the first to exchange a greeting or salutation with some complete stranger walking through the halls, if you’re not going to make the effort, then I’m not going to make the effort, which actually makes me happy.

Which gets me back to the guy on the elevator, as I was realizing that this was the future me (I actually age pretty well apparently, aside from the Rockport shoes, I’ll never wear a pair of Rockport’s), I began to like the guy, until I realized how illogical that was in itself…If I like the guy, a complete stranger, then he’s no longer future me, because there is no way in hell that future me, the old curmudgeon with Rockport’s, would come to like a complete stranger during a short elevator ride. No, I can’t possibly like the guy (and if I’m being honest, what’s to like? It’s not like we had anything in common, he’s old. What would we talk about? Metamucil and shoes that provide good support? AARP benefits?), it just wouldn’t make sense.

If anything what I felt was a begrudging sense of respect for the way this guy goes about life. This might seem odd if you just read this entire, multiple page, ode to being anti-social. But, if you feel that way, then you genuinely missed the point of this entry, because I’m not anti-social. I have a tight nit group of friends, and if I know you, and feel comfortable around you, it’s about all you can do to get me to shut up. I have an opinion on anything and everything, I enjoy debating, and if you get a few drinks in me, look out, I’ll ramble on about everything from the intricacies of Mario Kart, to the meaning of life. So what I’m advocating here today is not anti-social tendencies, and cutting yourself off from others. I’m just pleading for all the nonsense of forcing myself to be social towards people who I have no real desire to get to know, and won’t possibly need later in life, that’s all. If that makes me and that old man in the elevator, asses, it makes us asses.
And that’s all I’ve really got to say about that.

Partial List of Shit I Hate (In No Particular Order)

Yeah, I know it's supposed to be the Holiday Season which arbitrarily means people pretend to be nice to another to solicit better gifts from their peers, but I'm more genuine than that. I'm sarcastic and cynical all year long baby, Christmas isn't stopping this train of negativity. Since I was coming up short on blog topics, and my friends at school were commenting on my remarkable ability to dislike almost everything, I decided to compile a partial list of the facets of existence I find most displeasing to me. I made the bold assertion to them I'd come up with 1000, which probably won't happen because I'll either get bored or run out of ideas and steal other peoples. So, here's part one of shit I hate, enjoy.

1.) B.C The Comic Strip- Caveman humor isn’t fucking funny, neither is their over reliance on puns.
2.) Healthy Choice Soup- Take out the sodium and flavor of regular canned soup and you get this watery piss that is a sorry excuse for a substitute
3.) 100 Calorie Snack Packs- When I want Dorritos, I don’t want 3.5 chips so I can watch my fucking waistline, I want a whole bag because they taste delicious and I don’t give a fuck about my inevitable weight gain
4.) Kobe Bryant- I have a particular distaste both for Lakers players and rapists, so he “wins” twice
5.) Old Nicktoons Not Being in a Basic Cable Package- Give me my fucking childhood memories. You take my money, happiness, and time from me Comcast, can’t you throw me a bone here?
6.) Cold Kitchen Tiles- No one likes starting their day with freezing feet
7.) People who Bitch I Drink Bottled Water- It’s a free fucking country, I am free to let myself be scammed if I so please, the environment be damned.
8.) The Fourth Kind- one of the worst movies I have ever seen, do not watch it, it will make you angry. In no way scary or believable.
9.) “My Kid is an Honor Student” Bumper Stickers- You should also add a “I have poor self image so I need to vicariously live through my child’s accomplishments” sticker as well.
10.) Diet Fads- There is no fucking miracle secret to weight loss, housewives of America. Eat less, move more for a while. It’s that simple.
11.) Christmas Classics Remixed into ‘House’ Music- *shakes head sadly* My generation has fucked up a lot of things, this might be the one that makes me most sad.
12.) Ben Roethlisberger- See #4, just replace “Lakers” with “Steelers”
13.) The New York Yankees- I could cop out and give each one a reason, but they don’t deserve that much space on MY list. Fuck all of them, especially A-Rod.
14.) Waiting in Traffic- Traffic prevents me from doing what I want to be doing, which is NOT waiting in traffic.
15.) Buttered Popcorn Jelly Beans- A vile blight upon the world of candy, it shouldn’t exist.
16.) Nickelback- Chad Kroeger and Co. whining about god knows what while playing the same power chords over and over again is utter garbage. He’s Canadian too, so he sucks even more.
17.) People who add “Lol” at the end of a text message- You didn’t laugh, you put that there for no reason.
18.) People who respond to the one word text message- If I send you a “k” or “word,” our conversation is over. Don’t keep talking to me, I’ve moved onto better things.
19.) Fat Chicks who wear thongs- Gross, leave that garment to the good looking girls
20.) Fat Chicks in general- Gross, please remove yourself from my line of sight
21.) Starbucks Coffee Size System- I get it, you’re trendy and a reasonably upscale coffee place, but on the rare instances that I am even in Starbucks, give me a fucking small coffee when I ask, don’t make me say “tall” asshole.
22.) Having all Vowels in “Words with Friends”- What the fuck am I supposed to do with 2 A’s, 3 E’s, 1 O, and 1 U, besides angrily throw my phone at the couch?
23.) High Beam Tailgaters- We are the only two cars on the road, do you really need to have your Chevy Silverado halfway up my ass with the flood lights on dickhead?
24.) Public School Lunch- A disgusting collecting of whatever the ladies in the kitchen scraped off the floor and threw in the blender that day.
25.) Piss Mist on the Toilet Seat- Im not talkin’ drops of urine you can see and get rid of, even if it sucks. Piss mist is so fine you don’t realize it’s there until you have settled in, then realized your ass cheeks are moist. Awful.
26.) Mosquitos- Can’t even detect them until you hear that high pitched frequency buzz, but by then its too late: you have an itch that never goes away.
27.) Leaving a pen in your pants pocket through the laundry process- I do this all the time, but it doesn’t prevent me from getting pissed off at the machines, even though its my fault.
28.) Abercrombie and Fitch Stores- The clothes are fine, but the stores smell like someone hosed the hole place down in Axe body spray, all while blaring pop music so loud it makes your ears gush blood. Disgusting.
29.) MySpace- Only pedophiles use this anymore right?
30.) Dan Shaughnessy- Made a career off of hating the team’s he is supposed to cover and willingly defiles anyone in the name of sustaining his alcoholic tendencies. Epitome of a hack.
31.) Chicks who get mad when guys look at their exposed cleavage- IT DIDN’T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT, YOU PUT IT THERE! It’s like telling little kids not to look at animals at the zoo. Bitches.
32.) Little Kids on Xbox Live- Whiny, over emotional little pricks who ruin my happy time by screaming obscenetities about how awesomely they killed me. I take solace knowing these kids are all getting beat up at their respective schools
33.) Never Wears a Shirt Guy- It could be while playing an acoustic while in the quad or walking around the freshman dorm, the message is still the same: “Im a douche, I just don’t know it yet.”
34.) CatDog- Always watched the show, never enjoyed it. Took me until now to realize this show actually sucked.
35.) Conversation with Any Customer Service Representative- Take me, multiply my level of animosity towards humankind/existence by 1000, then give these people a small modicum of power and tell them their job is to assist other people. Result: Everyone loses.
36.) Hairy Backed Men at the Beach- I go to the beach to relax and enjoy myself, not see a sweaty, heart-attack-waiting- to-happen flaunt his self made back carpet off. There is no way you don’t know you have a throw rug on your back.
37.) Parades- These are fun when you are like 7 years old and the loud noises are a welcome distraction since you have no attention span. Now? It’s just a fucking massive traffic issue in the name of watching people walk in an orderly manner under some unifying theme.
38.) Cleaning up Puke- I’ve dealt with a lot of gross substances in my day, but puke is the absolute worst. The consistency makes it impossible to clean up in any effective way and the smell is REPUGNANT, making me want to puke myself.
39.) Cold Water Showers- I have no idea why people even bathed until there was hot water. It feels like icy knives are being shoved through every pore in your body. I’d rather smell like stale sweat and yesterday’s dinner that I spilled on myself than take a cold shower.
40.) People who call you, you miss the call, then they don’t pick up when you call right back- ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!?! What did you do in the 5 seconds between it being absolutely vital to talk to me and deciding that it wasn’t worth it after all? I hope you stubbed your toe or some other sort of minor inconvenience, because it would make me feel better.

Still Kind of Upset About Tim Burton's Version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Hey Tim, Willy is not supposed to look like a gay-euro hipster, he's just not.
I thought I was over it, I really did. Yes the movie sucked on such an epic scale that my eyes borderline had to be pried open Clockwork Orange style, and yes the movie forever tainted Johnny Depp for me (I don't care how much I love Fear and Loathing, you played an active part in ruining a childhood memory), but I thought I'd put it behind me.

Turns out nope, I hadn't. I've got some kinda deep seeded emotional issues about this movie.  Here I was, Thanksgiving Eve, pounding a few Harpoon Cranberry Ale's (pleasantly delicious, but you have to let them open up...ok I sound a bit too beer snobby now), and watching the original, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with my girlfriend (yea, I felt old), who unbeknownst to me has never sat through the entire movie, how that nugget had slipped by me to this point, I don't know, my jaw is still on the floor, and I can't even enjoy it because the entire time I was just thinking about how much I HATED the Tim Burton version.

I feel the same way Willy, the same way.
So here's a big "Screw You" Tim Burton. Screw you for ruining my already wicked lame old person's Thanksgiving Eve by making a film like 6 years ago, that still gets my blood pressure boiling today, even when I'm not watching it. You may not be the creative genius that everyone thinks you are, but you sure know how to get under someone's skin and ruin a classic, I guess that's a skill. It's impressive asshattery, at any rate.

PS: The single most douchey thing Tim Burton did here, and it's a long list, was changing the name from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...Really Tim, you can rip off and ruin a classic, but the title isn't good enough for you?

My Completely Rational Hate For Cecilia Cassini

You know how you just have irrational hate for some people? Like there's no real reason for you to hate them but you just do? This isn't that. This is the most rational hate I've ever had in my life.

Jesus H. Fuck you little girl. And I know how terrible of a person that sentence made me, but this isn't your average child. This girl is a class A bitch. Like Lohan's character in Mean Girls would be a tame version of her...she's definitely got her parents bunking in the kids room while she takes over the Master Suite. Could you just act like a real person? You're like a gay man trapped in a child's body, it's so fucking weird.

And honey, I hate to tell you this, but you've got clothes like a dickhead. Just because you stuck tinkerbell wings on the back of a dress they sell at Target doesn't make you special. It means some fashionista with an eye for little girls thought your dress was cute and need an "in" to get close with you. You can't just go walking around looking like a Disney fairy in real life outside of Halloween week.

Easily the best part of this girls life is going to be the day she shows up on page 6 of some gossip rag all strung out in her mug shot...but at least you'll look totally cute in your ridiculous clothes...

See, completely rational.
